This photo was a concept I'd had in mind and had wanted to shoot for months now. It was going to be my first serious photo of 2009 and I suppose it still is, though circumstances have changed some of the meaning behind it.
The symbols are found easily enough, so I won't waste time on that. I've been interested in iconography and idolatry for some time, the deep rich colors and gold tones of the traditional Orthodox icons made me want to do my own, with my own symbolisms and meanings. Crowley's "Every man and every woman is a star" is part of it. I'm not really a Thelemite, but I guess I am a magician and this photo is my latest working, photographic manifestation of my Will in action.
Shot by myself in the room that used to be my bedroom when I was a teenager. The halo is a prop and is hanging on my wall, though I did make relatively minor tweaks in PS. The cuts are real, though the hole was embellished for art's sake.

Good hand positioning - it leads me up your right arm, to the left hand, directly to your face. That was one of the first things I noticed. The right hand guarding the heart (or place it once was), along with the red robes, is very reminicent of the 'sacred heart' icons of Jesus. I was thinking about how the smaller cut might relate to the larger one, and it occured to me that it might be after the wound in the side of Jesus when on the cross, which you are as well with the cross directly behind your head. This 'wound in the side' does seem very insignificant, though, so whatever it represents can't be thought of too highly.
The expression is calm but self-assured, or even aloof, as one might expect from a deity. The calmness of the face contrasts with the painful-looking chest wound, indicating that the removal of the organ was for the best, as you hinted at with the quote. A heartless being has no compassion, no love, no tenderness, no heartbreak, and no emotional connection to other beings, which would make for a truly objective and merciless god, though not necessarily a popular one.
I recognise three of the symbols, but the triangular one on the right has me stumped, though I know I've seen it before. I wonder, does the cross of Lorraine in your image also indicate poison?
I'm not really digging the border, but I'm guessing that were this printed out a gold frame would replace it.

The smaller cut is incidental and wasn't really meant to be anything, though it serves as a midway point between the giant gaping wound in the middle and the smaller, more healed cuts on either side. It ties them together, to indicate that the suffering leading up to this moment has gone on for some time. (Okay, I said it wasn't really meant to be anything, but I guess even when I don't immediately do something with intent, I can tie in meaning later as I discover them.)
Your second paragraph is a big part of it. If you don't have attachments, they can't be cut off. If you don't invest, you have nothing to lose.
The triangular symbol on the right is Aleister Crowley's unicursal hexagram, different than the standard six-sided hexagram by the addition of a five-petaled rose in the center. The rose is a symbol of divinity and its five petals plus the six sides of the hexagram add to 11, the number of divine union and the number that Lukas told me he felt is more my number than any other. The hexagram is used to express a high level of self-confidence and the belief that one can achieved any goal. If you follow Crowley and Thelema (which I don't, really, though I did research this particular symbol for this project) it also symbolizes the Great Work, the union of opposites.
As for the Cross of Lorraine (another symbol involved with the union of opposites), it was primarily a bit of parody of the presentation and prevalence of the Christian cross in Christian icons, only if you take it in the Manson sense, this would make me an icon of Celebritarianism. You're right that it indicates poison, though. And you can tie that over to the brokenhearted emotionlessness. Any (romantic) involvement with me will slowly and inevitably lead to death.
